چکیده

Strain-rate effects on fracture behavior of unidirectional composite materials are studied. Single-edge notched multi-layered unidirectional graphite composites (T800/3900-2) are investigated to examine fracture responses under static and dynamic loading conditions using a digital speckle correlation method. The fracture parameters for growing cracks are extracted as a function of fiber orientation. A 2D digital image correlation (DIC) method is used to obtain time-resolved full-field in-plane surface displacements when specimens are subjected to quasi-static and impact loading. Stress intensity factor and crack extension histories for pure mode-I and mixed mode cases are extracted from the full-field displacements. When compared to the dynamic stress intensity factors at crack initiation, the static values are found to be consistently lower. The stress intensity factor histories exhibit a monotonic reduction under dynamic loading conditions whereas an increasing trend is seen after crack initiation under quasi-static loading cases. This is potentially due to dominant crack face fiber bridging effects in the latter

Dynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel

The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

Dynamic Characteristics of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Epoxy Composites: An Experimental Approach

The effects of amine functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CNTs weight percent (wt. %), on the first bending natural frequencies and damping properties of CNT/epoxy composites are investigated in this paper. CNTs and amine functionalized CNTs (AFCNTs), with two different weight percentages, are used to manufacture the beam shaped specimens. Epoxy, CNT/epoxy (0.25 and 0.5 wt. % of CNT...

Surface Fractal Analysis for Estimating the Fracture Energy Absorption of Nanoparticle Reinforced Composites

In this study, the fractal dimensions of failure surfaces of vinyl ester based nanocomposites are estimated using two classical methods, Vertical Section Method (VSM) and Slit Island Method (SIM), based on the processing of 3D digital microscopic images. Self-affine fractal geometry has been observed in the experimentally obtained failure surfaces of graphite platelet reinforced nanocomposites ...

An Experimental Study of Dynamic Delamination of Thick Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Matrix Composites

-Dynamic delamination of thick fiber reinforced polymeric matrix composite laminates is investigated using optical techniques and high-speed photography. The laminates used in this work are graphite/epoxy fiber reinforced, 65 percent fiber volume fraction, composite plates consisting of 48 plies (6 mm plate thickness). Two different laminate layups are tested: a quasi-isotropic arrangement and ...
